Elections: Yoruba Assembly Expresses Doubt over Amupitan Neutrality

The Odua People’s Assembly (OPA) has expressed concern over the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, warning that the appointment could threaten Nigeria’s democratic stability. In a statement signed by its Chairman, Richard Olatunji Kayode, the group said the leadership of INEC must not be compromised, noting that the choice carries major implications for democracy and public trust.

OPA aligned itself with a coalition of over 1,000 lawyers under ALDRAP, which has urged the Senate to reject the nomination over fears it may undermine electoral integrity. The group referenced reports of alleged collaboration between Amupitan and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, saying such concerns demand scrutiny.

OPA urged the Senate to investigate the allegations and ensure that only persons committed to fair and credible elections are entrusted with leadership of the commission. The organization also called on civil society and citizens to remain alert and defend democratic values.
